Abstract

The article examines the phenomenon of psychological adaptation under prolonged stress caused by the war in Ukraine. Daily war-related stressors—both direct (threats to life, loss, combat actions) and indirect (economic uncertainty, social isolation, information overload)—have a profound impact on individual mental functioning. The aim of the study was to identify configurations of adaptive responses and to analyze their relationship with the level of stress exposure. The study involved 936 respondents from different regions of Ukraine. Psychological functioning was assessed using the Individual Model of Psychological Health, which includes eight key vectors. The level of stress exposure was measured using the validated Ukrainian Scale of Daily War-Related Stressors. Data were processed using cluster analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) in the SPSS statistical environment. The cluster analysis revealed three stable configurations of adaptation to daily war-related stressors: existential mobilization, exhausted adaptation, and productive engagement. Each configuration reflects a unique profile of adaptive responses to stressful conditions—from deep emotional involvement driven by the desire to support others and find meaning in ongoing events, to a focus on thinking, analysis, and internal organization as ways of maintaining psychological balance. Based on the obtained results, differentiated psychotherapeutic support strategies were proposed for each configuration within Gestalt therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy frameworks. These strategies emphasize bodily awareness, work with beliefs, emotional recovery, and the strengthening of internal psychological resources. The findings highlight the relevance of a typological approach to understanding adaptation in wartime conditions and have practical implications for developing targeted psychotherapeutic interventions.
