Abstract

The article is aimed at identifying the psychological structure of the image of home among refugees and at substantiating the content validity of a future questionnaire designed to study representations of home among repatriates. Special attention is given to distinguishing the substantive dimensions that shape the multilayered construct of home and determine its transformation under conditions of forced displacement and return. The study employed a purposive sample, which, while not representative, enables an in-depth exploration of the specific experiences of refugees. This empirical approach lays the foundation for the development of a diagnostic tool capable of accounting for the nomadic nature of experience and the multidimensional ambivalence of home representations. To determine the main dimensions of the future questionnaire, the “Twenty Statements Test” was applied, allowing respondents to articulate their own representations and evaluate the significance of various aspects of the living environment. This made it possible to identify relevant components of the psychological and symbolic perception of home for the subsequent development of the questionnaire.Seven core dimensions were revealed: security – insecurity, nostalgia – pain of loss, here – there, return – integration, material – symbolic, resource – burden, collective – individual. Each of these can be employed as a separate scale within a standardized instrument, enabling the collection of data on the ambivalence of home perception in different refugee groups. However, it is emphasized that, in order to strengthen the content validity of the questionnaire, it is necessary to balance the representation of all categories, refine item wording, stimulate respondents’ memories, and ensure a comprehensive reflection of the psychological, social, and symbolic aspects of the phenomenon under study.
