Abstract
The article presents an analysis of the peculiarities of the formation of life orientations of children and youth living in the border regions of Ukraine. Given the intensification of security challenges, social transformations, and the need to strengthen civic resilience, the importance of studying the values, motivations, and civic orientations of the younger generation is growing significantly. The borderland – as a multidimensional historical, cultural, political, and spatial-geographical phenomenon – creates a unique context for the socialization of young people, the formation of their identities, and life strategies. The work provides a theoretical and methodological review of the concepts of “life orientations,” “borderlands,” and “civic identity,” based on contemporary psychological, pedagogical, sociological, and anthropological approaches. It shows that the life orientations of young people include a set of values, motives, aspirations, and expectations regarding their own future, and their structure is sensitive to the influence of external risks and resources characteristic of border areas. An interdisciplinary approach to studying borderlands is analyzed, within which they are considered as a dynamic space for cultural interaction, identity construction, and rethinking the boundaries between “us” and “them.” The role of civic identity and civic competence as key components of the civic aspect of life orientations that determine the ability of young people to participate in community life, make responsible decisions, and form national and European belonging is highlighted. The results of a survey of children and young people on the characteristics of life orientations in the border regions of Ukraine are presented and analyzed, which testify to a formed system of values that combines humanistic, civic, and security orientations. Young people demonstrate a readiness for social responsibility, high sensitivity to issues of justice and democratic rights, as well as an orientation towards family support and personal experience as the basis for life decisions. The materials of the article contribute to a deeper understanding of how living conditions in the border region determine the trajectories of young people's life choices, their ability to adapt, active civic engagement, and the formation of an integrated identity.
