Abstract

The article presents the results of a theoretical analysis of the process by which an individual accepts their own role within a team. The relevance of the study is determined by the fact that in the modern world – where pandemics, digital transformation, and globalization have changed the nature of work – work teams are becoming increasingly distributed and multicultural, which complicates mutual understanding and reduces overall effectiveness. The lack of a clear understanding of both the process of role acceptance itself and its impact on the overall effectiveness of teamwork leads to conflicts, decreased motivation, and loss of productivity. The paper examines various approaches to studying the process of accepting one’s own role in a team and provides a definition of the construct “role acceptance” as a dynamic cognitive process aimed at forming a specific behavioral model, which is the result of conscious comprehension of duties and areas of responsibility within the team. The study identifies the main external and internal factors influencing effective role acceptance. Among the internal factors are expectations regarding one’s own role, expectations of other group members concerning the role performer, and the established behavioral model that ensures role fulfillment. The key characteristics of the team role acceptance process are defined as cognitive nature, dynamic character, duration, conscious nature, dependence on external and internal factors, and a strong connection with performance, group effectiveness, and more. A precise definition of the term “role-taking” will prove useful for coaches, managers, psychologists, and other experts engaged in work with group collectives, as it will provide a deep understanding of the causes of role conflicts, violations of collective rules, and complications in interaction within the team. Based on such a clear understanding of the essence of the concept “role-taking”, it will become possible to create psychological measures aimed at enhancing motivation, adaptation, and the level of satisfaction of collective members, which, in turn, will contribute to the successful achievement of the group’s common goals. This knowledge will help develop assessment and prediction of behavior in team members, improve their group adaptation, dynamics, and climate in the team.
