Abstract

Modern universities need to rethink their role in fostering a democratic culture, since, despite the proclaimed processes of democratization, authoritarian practices often persist in their internal life. These practices limit the participation of students and junior faculty, restrain the development of autonomy, and hinder the formation of trust and partnership. A central concept in overcoming these challenges is dignity, which determines the quality of interaction and the level of civic maturity within the university community. When dignity is ignored, paternalistic models are reproduced, and the capacity for self-governance is weakened. In times of war, the recognition and support of dignity become even more urgent, as they are directly linked to solidarity, responsibility, and practices of democratic participation.
