Abstract

This article presents the results of a comparative empirical study on the value orientations of intellectually and academically gifted high school students in Ukraine before and during the full-scale war that began in 2022. The research aimed to identify structural changes in the hierarchy of terminal values under the influence of traumatic sociopolitical circumstances. The study was conducted in two stages (2015 and 2024) and involved students affiliated with the Minor Academy of Sciences of Ukraine as the experimental group, and general high school students as the control group. The modified version of M. Rokeach’s Value Survey, adapted by N. Belska, was employed, focusing on terminal values. The findings reveal significant shifts in the value systems of gifted students under the conditions of war. In 2024, values related to personal and social security, material well-being, and public recognition were ranked significantly higher compared to the pre-war period. At the same time, values traditionally associated with self-actualization and creativity – such as true friendship, personal development, artistic expression, and harmony with the world – lost priority. These changes reflect an adaptive response to existential threats and uncertainty caused by the war, including loss, forced migration, economic instability, and constant danger. The study highlights that gifted adolescents, characterized by increased moral sensitivity and cognitive complexity, experience traumatic events differently than their peers. Their value shifts may represent both protective mechanisms and the internal restructuring of personal priorities in crisis conditions. The results emphasize the need for targeted psychological and educational support programs that promote resilience and value-based self-determination among gifted youth in times of prolonged social stress.
