Abstract

In the context of globalisation and digitalisation, proficiency in a foreign language (in particular, English as the language of international communication) is becoming one of the important conditions for increasing the competitiveness of graduates of Ukrainian higher education institutions in the modern labour market, as well as the basis for their personal and professional development. Today, the scientific and pedagogical space of Ukraine lacks scientific and scientific-methodological works that would summarise the leading provisions formulated in regulatory and legal documents regarding the identification of trends in the development and reform of foreign language education in Ukraine, strategies that reflect state policy on improving foreign language training for higher education students, and also would outline areas of application of innovations (implementation of innovative approaches, technologies, forms of organisation, methods, and means of teaching in the educational process) to ensure the high-quality study of foreign languages by higher education students in Ukrainian higher education institutions (including the study of English). Identifying the regulatory and legal documents that govern the activities of higher education institutions in Ukraine about improving foreign language training for future specialists in various fields required studying the websites of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (as the sole legislative body of Ukraine), the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine (as the highest executive authority in Ukraine), and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (as one of the central executive authorities in Ukraine, which formulates and implements Ukraine’s state policy in the fields of education and science). The analysis of regulatory and legal documents proves that in the current conditions of globalisation of the world economy, improving the quality of foreign language training for future specialists in various fields at higher education institutions in Ukraine not only contributes to the economic development of our country, but also becomes a driving force for its successful integration into the European and global economic space.
