Abstract

This article examines personal hardiness as an important area of psychological research, closely linked to quality of life, mental health, and an individual’s ability to effectively cope with stressful situations. Hardiness is conceptualized as a complex, integral category that encompasses basic life attitudes, adaptive potential, and coping strategies. Drawing on a systemic approach, hardiness is presented as a three-level construct (metasystem – system – subsystem) that corresponds to the hierarchical structure of personality traits and is characterized by purposiveness, dynamism, and the capacity for self-organization. The systemic organization of hardiness ensures the integrity of its functioning and leads to outcomes such as a positive worldview, a sense of meaning in life, effective self-regulation, and successful adaptation. Hardiness is viewed as a resource that promotes physical and mental health, as well as a component of self-determination that motivates individuals to transform stressful life events into opportunities for personal growth.
