Abstract

This article examines the life and scholarly contributions of Ivan Havrylovych Yeremenko (1916–2002), a distinguished Ukrainian academic who significantly advanced the fields of special education and psychology. The author explores Yeremenko’s major achievements in oligophrenopedagogy and oligophrenodidactics, particularly his development of innovative methods for teaching and supporting children with intellectual disabilities. The paper highlights his pioneering approach to differentiated instruction, which emphasizes tailoring educational strategies to the individual needs of students. Yeremenko’s theoretical concepts on the prevention of developmental disorders in children are also analyzed, with a focus on the critical role of a harmonious family environment and the necessity of adaptive teaching practices. His contributions to research methodology are underscored as foundational for modern defectology and related fields. The article also discusses Yeremenko’s scientific school, which mentored multiple generations of scholars and educators, ensuring the continuation of his ideas in contemporary educational contexts. His strategies for fostering cognitive engagement and structuring the learning process remain highly relevant, providing a robust framework for the development of innovative teaching methods. This study underscores Yeremenko’s enduring influence on modern special education, particularly in the sphere of inclusive practices. Future research directions include adapting his theories to contemporary educational technologies and integrating his methodologies into the global academic discourse.
