Abstract

The new Ukrainian school requires the development of modern content, methodological approaches, and types of educational activities for all school subjects. Regarding the study of literature, this involves the selection of motivational, relevant literary texts for students that would really support interest in reading, form a culture of reading, listening, and communication; the use of effective reading strategies - a combination of methods, techniques, tasks, and techniques that help students learn the valuable and practical content of what they read. All of these tasks are implemented in the textbook “Foreign Literature. Grade 8” by the authors I. Horobchenko, V. Snegireva, O. Kaenko and O. Bushakova. The section “Time in Search of a Hero,” which is quite relevant today, combines the best examples of ancient and medieval heroic epics that introduce students to the exploits of Achilles and Hector, Odysseus, Aeneas, Sigurd, and Roland - the standard heroes of their time. Schoolchildren will continue to get acquainted with the literature of the Middle Ages in the section "Light from the East", which, in addition to the traditional works of Li Bo, Du Fu, and O. Khayama for the school curriculum, introduces Sh. Rustaveli's poem "The Knight in the Tiger's Skin" as a perfect example of Georgian literature about valor and true friendship. Renaissance literature is traditionally represented by the sonnets of F. Petrarch and W. Shakespeare, which demonstrate the transformation of ideas about the female ideal, and the tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" about love overcoming enmity and discord. The section “Knights and Jesters of Classical Literature” combines the novel by M. de Cervantes “Don Quixote” and the masterpiece of classicism – Moliere’s comedy “The Bourgeois Nobleman”, since the theme of the conflict between idealism and pragmatism, dreams and reality is heard in both of these iconic works of world literature. Modern literature is represented by works of the 20th and early 21st centuries popular among foreign readers: R. Bach, W. Stark, T. Pratchett, E.-E. Schmitt, N. Gaiman (to choose from). In particular, works in the fantasy genre by T. Pratchett “The Right to Spell”, “Eric” and N. Gaiman “Neverwhere”. The textbook continues the concept of a school textbook, initiated in grade 7, as a partially integrated course: a work of art is considered in it as a cultural case containing information from various fields of knowledge - history, geography, biology, astronomy, mathematics, etc. This method of studying a literary text involves its active perception and full comprehension, provides certain features of structuring and presenting content, and presents an educationally balanced system of educational texts and tasks.
