Abstract
The International Standing Conference for the History of Education (ISCHE) is an academic association dedicated to the history of education. Founded in 1978 as the International Standing Conference for the History of Education, it has been registered in the German register of associations under the same name since 2015. It is composed of individual and institutional members from all over the world. The theme of ISCHE 46 is “Teachers and Teaching – History in Motion”. The in-person conference will take place in Lille, France from 8 to 11 July 2025. The online conference will take place from 15 to 16 July. Throughout history and at all levels and types of education, teaching has been at the heart of the educational process. ISCHE 46 examined the history of teachers and teaching, from ancient times to the beginning of the 21st century in all its diversity. UNESCO defines teachers as anyone who teaches others. Using a broad definition of “teaching”, ISCHE 46 examined the history not only of professional teachers in institutions from pre-school to university, but also of coaches, families, tutors, youth associations, popular movements, self-study and even animals and technological devices. The conference theme “Teachers and Teaching” aimed to shed light on the actual and ideal roles of teachers and teaching in schools and society. Their functions, meanings and status have changed profoundly throughout history and are full of contradictions. In the case of school teachers, they have been instruments of literacy, knowledge and even emancipation. The very nature of the teacher’s function – imparting certain kinds of knowledge to others – can also raise expectations and create tensions in relations with those responsible for educational policy. The conference worked on eight A-areas: • Career paths and identities of teachers • Working and living conditions of teachers • Knowledge practices • Relationships and interactions with other participants • Teaching tools and school artifacts • Teachers and teaching outside the school • Non-human participants and pedagogical practices • Representations of teachers and teaching in literature, film and popular culture. As well as six B-areas from the participating working groups: • Public history of education • The powerful empire of the environment: the history of secondary education • The history of knowledge in the history of education • The history of education in African societies • Teacher education and written culture: the history of libraries, books and practices • Crises and renewal of education in a complex world, 1870-1950.
