Abstract
The role of playback theatre as an innovative tool for socio-psychological support of traumatized communities caused by the war in Ukraine is examined. The specifics of psychological resources lost due to traumatic events and the need for their restoration for groups such as families of the deceased, wounded, veterans, internally displaced persons, and volunteers are analyzed. Based on T. M. Tytarenko’s concept of socio-psychological support, three levels of assistance are outlined – recipient, objective, and subjective – and the possibilities of playback theatre to facilitate psychological resources at each of these levels. Specifically, at the recipient level, playback theatre can serve as a paratherapeutic practice for urgent mental restoration; at the objective level, it promotes group resource search through narrative interaction; and at the subjective level, it acts as a powerful source of existential support, catharsis, and self-realization. Special attention is given to the advantages of playback theatre in the interaction of social donors and recipients, particularly the organization of informal meetings and role exchanges, which contribute to mutual understanding and increased subjectivity of both parties. It is emphasized that the main resource is not the material or psychological resources themselves, but the initiation of the process of their independent search through participation in playback theatre practices. Recommendations are substantiated for integrating playback theatre into socio-psychological support programs and the need for further research on this unique artistic-therapeutic tool for supporting communities that have experienced trauma.
