Abstract

The article addresses the problem of determining the psychological and pedagogical principles of forming key competencies of students in grades 7-9 in the process of learning English. It is emphasized that the formation of any competence should be considered in a psychological and pedagogical context, since competence is a personal asset. The analysis of the source database demonstrates the importance of taking into account research on age psychology, which allows matching exercises and tasks with the age characteristics of students in grades 7-9 for the formation of key competencies in English lessons. The results of the student survey made it possible to determine the interests of students in learning a foreign language. The skills and attitudes defined by the State Standard of Basic Secondary Education, which are components of eleven key competencies, and a guideline for selecting appropriate methods and techniques that have competence potential, are considered. Through observation of the educational process in general secondary education institutions and conversations with English teachers, effective methods and techniques for forming a particular key competency have been identified. A special role is given to the project method, which contributes to the enrichment of students’ vocabulary, the development of all types of speech activity, and the comprehensive formation of key competencies.
