Abstract
The article actualized the problem of implementing a contextual approach in the education of basic secondary school students. The potential of modern textbooks in natural science subjects (biology, physics, chemistry, geography), which are developed in accordance with model curricula based on the State Standard for Basic Secondary Education (2020), have passed a competitive selection and have been introduced into the educational practice of the New Ukrainian School, for the formation and development of key competencies in students through contextual tasks was determined. The types, main structural components and features of contextual tasks used in textbooks that implement the new content of the natural science education field are specified. Based on a comparative analysis of the content and methodological apparatus of textbooks on natural science subjects for grade 7, it was found that all new-generation textbooks implement a contextual approach, form and develop competence in the field of natural sciences, engineering and technology ensure that students are aware of the relationship between the knowledge of the natural education field and the world around them. It was concluded that the use of a specially designed system of contextual tasks in text-books is one of the leading conditions for preparing basic secondary school students for the application of subject and key competencies in real life, an effective means of diagnosing the level of their formation, and preparing for international comparative studies. The feasibility of ensuring a didactically justified ratio of different types of educational tasks in the textbook, including contextual ones, is substantiated. The prospects of researching the problem of strengthening the functionality of a modern textbook as a means of realizing the competence potential and practical orientation of school natural science education are determined.
