Abstract
Franko Ivan Yakovych in his works condemned social and national discrimination in the field of education and upbringing, the detachment of learning from life, dogmatism, religious intoxication, drill and physical punishment of students. I.Ya. Franko lived and worked in Galicia, which was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, where the Ukrainian people were a national minority and suffered from national and social oppression. The Austro-Hungarian system of public education generally met the requirements of the time, but did not provide for teaching children in the Ukrainian language. At the same time, there was no Ukrainian teacher's seminary. Therefore, the poet in his works criticized the existing education system, proposed ways to reform it on democratic principles, and defended the ideas of the struggle for freedom and prosperity of the Ukrainian people. From the second half of the 70s of the 19th century. and until the end of his days he actively popularized the best works of Slavic and foreign writers, translating many works from other languages into Ukrainian. Works: "My Love", "It's Not Time, It's Not Time, It's Not Time...", "Teacher", "Big Anniversaries", "Open Letter to Galician Ukrainian Youth", "What Does the Galician Working Community Want?", "The Harmfulness of Muscoviteism", "Our Public Schools and Their Needs" etc.
