Abstract
One of the leading themes of S.'s work Vasylchenko became interested in the life of folk teachers, exposed the unsatisfactory state of education in Ukraine, the backwardness of folk schools, the difficult legal and material and everyday situation of primary school teachers ("Teacher's Notes", "Notes from the Life of Village Teachers" (1898-1905), "Folk School and Native Language in Ukraine" (Hromada magazine, 1906). In Kyiv, he published his first works "In the Dark" (1906), later - a series of short stories from the life of schools and teachers: "At the Gentlemen's" (1906), 1910-1912 - "From the Beginning", "Father-in-Law", etc. During the years of the Ukrainian Democratic Revolution, he supported it, recording his impressions in the book "With a Song Through Fire and Water". Since 1921 he traveled to the cities and villages of Podillia, collecting archival and ethnographic materials about the struggle Ukrainian peasants against serfdom in the 19th century. The result of the trip was the writing of the play "Karmelyuk" (1922). From 1921 he worked as a teacher, head of an orphanage, teacher of Ukrainian language and literature at the Ivan Franko Labor School No. 61 in Kyiv (1922–1928). He wrote works for children and youth, the cycles "Winged Words", "Wandering", "Hunger", "Guests", "Aviation Circle", wrote about orphans, teaching talent and the fate of the people "Wandering" (1922), "My Path" (1931), etc.
