Abstract
The article explores the social role of playback theatre as a unique form of contemporary interactive art. It highlights the historical and conceptual connections of playback theatre with improvisational (spontaneity) theatre, psychodrama, art therapy, other social practices, and areas of psychology, emphasizing their influence on the goals, objectives, and organization of playback theatre events. The social-therapeutic vector of playback theatre is initially considered from three perspectives: 1) the unique psychological atmosphere of playback theatre events, characterized by the combination of four values (phenomena): play, immersion, unity, and freedom; 2) applied use for socio-psychological support: indirect assistance through the activation of community work, enhancement of individual communicative resources, etc.; 3) artistic features of contemporary theatre: performativity (with its interactivity), participatory nature (with improvisation and partial immersiveness), and sometimes ritualization. The social significance of playback theatre is substantiated primarily by its ability to create a space for the release and processing of emotions, support for marginalized groups, and the development of empathy and critical thinking. The article demonstrates that playback theatre performance promotes social self-reflection, modeling of complex social processes, and the transmission of intergenerational experience through the exchange of narratives and socially significant rituals. The prospects for the practical use of playback theatre as a tool for socio-psychological support or accompaniment (assistance), especially in times of social crises, are outlined, and the need for further research into its social-therapeutic vector is emphasized.
