Abstract

The textbook presents a new content of foreign literature in the 8th grade (in particular, the list of works to be studied has been significantly reduced), which brings it closer to the needs and capabilities of 14-15-year-old teenagers. The section “Time in Search of a Hero” combines the best examples of ancient and medieval epics about the exploits of Achilles and Hector, Odysseus, Aeneas, Sigurd, Roland – the standard heroes of their time. The Middle Ages are represented in the section “Light from the East” by the lyrics of Li Bo, Du Fu, O. Khayam, as well as Shota Rustaveli’s poem “The Knight in the Tiger Skin” about the value of true friendship. Renaissance literature is traditionally represented by the sonnets of F. Petrarch and V. Shakespeare, which demonstrate the transformation of ideas about the ideal of a woman, and the tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" with the eternal images of lovers overcoming hostility and discord. Great works in the textbook are presented in the form of bright key fragments, in particular, the novel by M. de Cervantes "Don Quixote" and the comedy by Moliere "The Bourgeois Nobleman" are combined in the section "Knights and Fools in Classical Literature". Modern literature, the works of Richard Bach, Ulf Stark, Terry Pratchett, Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, Neil Gaiman are presented for choice. The selected literary texts are readable, diverse, and contain personal problems important for students. The advantage of works whose heroes are children, including students' peers; topics relevant to eighth-graders; popular genres among readers of this age – epic poem, short story, fantasy – contribute to motivation for reading. The textbook implements a comfortable educational environment for male and female students thanks to a special way of structuring and presenting content, clear learning strategies and a system of tasks. The literary text is considered in it as a cultural case containing information from various fields of knowledge – history, geography, biology, astronomy, mathematics, etc. The stated synergistic approach contributes to the integration of the cognitive and value content of literary texts. The authors reformatted the educational texts, presenting them dialogically, adapted to the students’ perception, in popular science and journalistic styles. Theoretical and literary concepts are considered in the course of studying literary texts, mostly students formulate them independently, and then check them against the textbook’s dictionary. Non-standard, specifically addressed to students, educational texts, tasks, exercises, intellectual games help them build their understanding of the artistic (media) work, arguing or agreeing with competent readers (textbook authors, critics, literary scholars), who give their own impressions and assessment of what they read. Teachers who tested the textbook noted that the presentation of artistic works and the combination of various types of educational activities in it enable students to master the "technologies" of working with the text, and the teacher receives excellent didactic material that helps him organize students' reading.
