Abstract
Yefimova A. G. «The Peculiarities of the Socio-Psychological Adaptation of Ukrainians to Forced Migration Under Conditions of War». – Qualified scientific work on the rights of the manuscript. A Dissertation for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Specialty 053 Psychology (05 – Social and Behavioral Sciences). State Higher Educational Institution “University of Educational Management” of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv, 2025. Annotation content The dissertation is devoted to the theoretical substantiation and experimental investigation of the peculiarities of the socio psychological adaptation of Ukrainians to forced migration under conditions of war. The object of the research was the socio-psychological adaptation of the individual, while the subject was the specific features of the socio-psychological adaptation of Ukrainians to forced migration in wartime. The aim of the study was to theoretically justify and empirically examine these peculiarities. In order to achieve this aim, the following tasks were carried out: 1. Based on a theoretical analysis of scientific sources, the main scientific approaches to studying the problem of the socio-psychological adaptation of forced migrants were identified. 2. The content and specificity of the socio-psychological adaptation of forced migrants were theoretically substantiated, with particular emphasis on its dynamics, conditions, factors, and indicators. 3. An empirical investigation was conducted on the peculiarities of the socio psychological adaptation of Ukrainians to forced migration during the war. 4. A model for optimizing the socio-psychological adaptation of Ukrainians to forced migration was developed. 5. A program for optimizing the socio psychological adaptation of Ukrainians to forced migration was substantiated and tested. To accomplish these tasks, a combination of theoretical, empirical/statistical, and formative methods was employed: Theoretical Methods: The work analyzed the primary scientific approaches to the phenomenon of individual socio-psychological adaptation; it examined the theoretical aspects of migrants’ socio-psychological adaptation – including its content, dynamics, and factors – and developed and substantiated a theoretical systemic intersubjective model of the socio psychological adaptation of forced migrants. Empirical Methods: The level and peculiarities of the socio-psychological adaptation of Ukrainians to the conditions of forced migration during the war were investigated. Models of the socio-psychological adaptation of Ukrainians to migration were determined, depending on whether the migration was voluntary or forced and on its duration, and the factors of these models were identified. Moreover, the significance of migrant subjectivity for the adaptation process was demonstrated. Formative Methods: A systemic intersubjective model and a methodology for optimizing the socio-psychological adaptation of forced migrants were developed; subsequently, a formative program was created and its effectiveness verified. The research provides an analysis of the peculiarities of the socio psychological adaptation of Ukrainians to forced migration in wartime. Two main adaptation models and the factors determining them were identified. It was determined that the migrant’s subjectivity serves as a psychological mechanism for adapting to a new sociocultural environment, and the productivity of a migrant’s adaptation strategies is directly linked to the development level of personal subjectivity. Furthermore, it is noted that socio psychological adaptation is inherently an intersubjective process, being related to the actualization of a shared socio psychological space that facilitates the mutual coordination of the intentions of all participants in interpersonal relationships – and consequently their mutual social adaptation. This intersubjectivity, in our view, also influences the model (or strategies) of Ukrainians’ adaptation to forced migration. It has been confirmed that the socio-psychological adaptation of Ukrainians to migration is a dynamic, heterochronic process determined by both the duration and the socio-psychological conditions of the migration experience. The adaptation models of forced migrants (Ukrainians in the experimental group) and voluntary migrants (Ukrainians in the control group) were found to differ in nature and content. Empirical evidence indicates that among Ukrainians who emigrated voluntarily and ahead of schedule, a pronounced motivational-value component of socio psychological adaptation is observed, with a reliance on personal resources and internal control. In contrast, the adaptation process of Ukrainian forced migrants is based on external control (externality) and external resources – such as favorable attitudes from the state and its citizens, as well as material support. It was also found that the socio-psychological adaptation process of Ukrainian forced migrants exhibits a less pronounced and unstable structure, fundamentally characterized by a conflict between the desire to integrate into a new sociocultural environment and the longing to return to their homeland, thereby exhibiting a significant affective component. It was determined that the active adaptation model – which is characteristic of Ukrainian voluntary migrants – is underpinned by psychological traits such as resourcefulness, subjectivity, psychological well-being, and the capacity for intersubjective interaction. Conversely, the passive adaptation model, typical of Ukrainian forced migrants due to the war in Ukraine, is marked by a diminished development of the above factors. Owing to a low tolerance for uncertainty, these Ukrainians tend to experience depressive states, spontaneous aggression, and exhibit an above-average level of emotional lability. In other words, the passive adaptation model is characterized by insufficient emotional self-regulation, an inadequate ability to identify and manage one’s own psychological resources, and passivity. The scientific work presents the content and results of the testing of a systemic intersubjective model for optimizing the socio-psychological adaptation of Ukrainian forced migrants, which comprises four main components: Subjectivity; The ability for subject-to-subject interaction; Effective problem-solving and decision-making strategies; The activation of resilience and resourcefulness. All four components of the model represent a complex of psychological traits and skills and therefore require a structural and comprehensive approach for their actualization and development. To implement the model, a program for optimizing the socio-psychological adaptation of Ukrainians to forced migration was created and tested, and its effectiveness was empirically demonstrated. The scientific novelty of the dissertation lies in the following aspects: A systemic intersubjective model of the socio-psychological adaptation of migrants was created and substantiated. For the first time, the significance of subjectivity in the process of socio-psychological adaptation of Ukrainians to forced migration was delineated and substantiated. Theoretical developments concerning the problem of forced migration, the dynamics of migrants’ socio-psychological adaptation, its content, and factors were supplemented. The psychological specificity of forced migration was revealed, in particular the existence of two distinct adaptation models for Ukrainians – active and passive. The active adaptation model, characteristic of Ukrainian voluntary migrants, is supported by psychological and adaptive resourcefulness, subjectivity, psychological well-being, and the capacity for intersubjective interaction. In contrast, the passive adaptation model, typical of Ukrainian forced migrants, is associated with a predominantly low level of development of the aforementioned factors. Owing to low tolerance for uncertainty, these individuals are prone to depressive states, spontaneous aggression, and exhibit a higher-than-average level of emotional lability. The characteristic factors of their passive adaptation model include insufficient emotional self-regulation, an inadequate ability to identify and manage their own psychological resources, and passivity. A systemic intersubjective model for optimizing the socio psychological adaptation of Ukrainians to migration was developed, on the basis of which a training program was created. The effectiveness of both the developed model and the optimization program for socio psychological adaptation to migration was proven. The practical significance of the dissertation research is determined by the substantiation and testing of the model and the training program for optimizing socio-psychological adaptation to forced migration. The developed systemic intersubjective model of socio-psychological adaptation can be employed in creating adaptation programs for various socio-psychological categories of adaptants – not only for forced migrants. Similarly, the presented program for optimizing socio psychological adaptation, specifically designed for Ukrainian forced migrants, can be applied in socio-psychological centers and other institutions working with migrants, internally displaced persons, and refugees. The prospects for further research lie in deepening the understanding of the content of the models of socio-psychological adaptation of forced migrants. In our view, it would be pertinent to examine the gender, age, cultural, psychological, and other specific aspects of the socio-psychological adaptation of forced migrants.
