Abstract

The article examines the features of the activities of student support centers in higher education institutions of Ukraine (using the example of Borys Grinchenko Kyiv Metropolitan University, Ukrainian Catholic University, and Kryvyi Rih State Pedagogical University). On February 20, 2024, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine issued an order to implement a pilot project for the creation and operation of student support centers in 2024–2025, taking a step towards introducing foreign experience into the Ukrainian higher education system. It was found that the model for the creation of such centers is the centers of academic success at US universities, whose activities are aimed at helping students adapt to university life, providing psychological assistance and academic support. The key idea of ​​​​the centers of academic success is to provide comprehensive assistance to higher education applicants in order to maintain the student contingent, improve academic results, and prepare for a career. It was determined that Ukrainian student support centers focus their efforts on the adaptation of first-year students, provide psychological support to participants in the educational process, offer courses on in-depth study of specialized disciplines and courses that cover a wide range of relevant topics aimed at developing skills, knowledge and competencies for modern society (providing psychological support, media literacy, international law, leadership, etc.) and conduct educational and research research. The centers contribute to the comprehensive personal development of students and their professional development. In addition, they provide consulting services to applicants, assist in completing the necessary documentation, organize pre-university preparation, in particular preparation for the National Multi-Subject Test (NMT), and also provide opportunities for postgraduate education. The conducted research highlighted the need for a thorough study of the basic principles and areas of activity of academic success centers at US universities and student support centers at higher education institutions in Ukraine in order to introduce best practices into educational practice.
