Abstract
When substantiating an interactive approach to developing civic identity (the specific focus), it is crucial to differentiate between research traditions and methodologies for studying identity in general and civic identity specifically. Two primary research traditions in identity studies are theorization and research within developmental and social psychology. Within social psychology, key methodological systems include primordialism, essentialism, and constructivism. This paper proposes a broad definition of civic identity, arguing that it is a dynamic, lifelong process shaped by multiple factors. Two main methodologies for studying civic identity are identified: representational and activity-based. The representational methodology, encompassing ontological and epistemological research areas, is briefly characterized. The emphasis, however, is placed on the activity-based methodology, which focuses not only on interaction (the study of participant interaction in communicative acts) but also on the interactive environment that facilitates this interaction. This activity-based methodology is conceptualized through discursive psychology, which examines issues from the participant’s perspective. Using the facet method, this paper establishes classification features of the interactive approach to developing civic identity. The central role of this interactive approach in constructing civic identity among youth in de-occupied territories, fostering new narratives, and forging new developmental pathways is highlighted. Finally, based on the core principles of discursive psychology (constructiveness, intentionality, and situationality), and considering the specific characteristics of youth civic identity – namely, its role in supporting and changing social realities through transformational, contextual, and self-determination tasks within an inclusive environment – this paper identifies the socio-psychological principles for implementing an interactive approach to developing youth civic identity.
