Abstract

The Russian-Ukrainian war, being a war of identities, underscores the importance of fostering civic and pro-European identities as key drivers of national development and security. The educational community plays a critical role in driving change in this area. A study conducted in May-June 2023 (N=1294) examined the identities of educators in the Sumy, Rivne, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. The findings indicate that national (96.6%) and civic (96.6%) identities are the most significant for educators, followed by professional (86.3%), regional (81.7%), and European (76.4%) identities. Soviet identity is minimally represented (3.5%). A comparative regional analysis revealed significant differences in attitudes toward Ukrainian symbols, the European Union, and NATO, highlighting a rise in national consciousness. Overall, the study confirmed a trend toward strengthening national and civic identities, fostering detachment from Soviet heritage and Russian influence. The war has acted as a catalyst for rethinking values and reaffirming belonging to the Ukrainian nation. Educators play a key role in societal consolidation, shaping social identity, and promoting democratic and European values.
