Abstract

The greatness of the figure of P. Kulish – writer, poet, ethnographer, folklorist, philosopher, public and educational figure, original amateur historian, literary critic, translator – in the national and cultural life of Ukraine it is quite easy to identify, because in the many aspects of the development of national culture in the nineteenth century. He became either the first or the best among the others. Thus, participating in 1845–1846 in the socio-political (he was a member of a secret political organization – the Cyril and Methodius Society), aimed at the liberation of Ukrainians and their statehood, P. Kulish providentially came to the conclusion that there was an urgent need to spread literacy among them.
