Abstract

The article updates the problem of the influence of the level of formation of reading competence of high school students on the probability of their achieving real life and educational goals. The possibilities of the textbook as a «learning compass» capable of directing high school students to the formation of a life trajectory with an understanding of the requirements and opportunities of the surrounding environment are considered. It is noted that the relevance of the problem for Ukrainian society becomes obvious against the background of the global trend of the fading of the reading culture, the decrease in the level of reading literacy in general and the critical analysis of a large flow of information of varying quality. The international experience of the development of cross-curricular skills and reading literacy of high school students considered. The analysis and generalization of the achievements of pedagogy and pedagogical psychology made it possible to make an assumption that the reduced level of reading competence of high school students negatively affects their ability to achieve success in education and in the future professional life, which endangers their competitiveness in the labor market. Attention is focused on the competence-oriented direction of the educational process in high school and its reflection in the content of the school textbook. It is emphasized that the improvement of the effectiveness of the modern textbook is facilitated by the adaptation of its content and methodical apparatus to the requirements of the European educational space, the involvement of young people in modern projects that will contribute to the active search for answers to questions about their place in society and the world. The directions of the formation of the personality of a modern graduate with the help of a textbook as a future active member of society and a transformative life force are determined: a competent reader; competent user in the information space; effective team communicator; conscious citizen of Ukraine.
