Abstract

The article focuses on the problem of using a modern geography textbook as an effective means of organizing project educational and cognitive activities of basic secondary education students. Based on a historical and methodological analysis of the features of the implementation of the project method in the history of domestic school geographical education, it is substantiated that the key factor in the effective implementation of the project activity technology is orienting the educational process towards students’ exploration and investigation of the surrounding world, nature and society by means of geography, taking into account their interests and prior cognitive experiences. The expediency of studying, generalizing and using the scientific and methodological heritage of the Ukrainian methodology of teaching geography is highlighted in order to develop effective mechanisms for transforming the educational process in geography in the New Ukrainian School and creating modern textbooks. The potential of current geography textbooks used in the educational process for organizing project activities in secondary education institutions is analyzed, and directions for improving the textbook in the context of content and expanding the functionality of the methodological apparatus are proposed. The possibilities of contextual tasks of a modern geography textbook in forming students’ skills of working in a group and preparing for project activities are determined. It is shown that such tasks, as well as project activities themselves, help students realize the practical significance of geography as a science and subject and its connection with other natural sciences, motivate them to active educational and cognitive activities, develop the ability to analyze, formulate a problem and choose alternative ways to solve it, make generalizations and conclusions, and use geographical knowledge in everyday life.
