Abstract
The article examines the issue of synergy between secondary education and vocational education and training at the high school level in the European Union (EU). In accordance with this goal, the author analyzed the latest research and publications of Ukrainian and foreign scholars on the problems of high school profiling. It has been established that in EU countries vocational education and training is an important component of the educational system that ensures the development of skills necessary for the modern labor market. The integration of vocational education and training into the school system depends on national models of education, but we have managed to identify common approaches to its implementation. It has been found that the key elements of vocational education and training in high school are cooperation with employers, flexibility of curricula, certification and recognition of qualifications, and the use of innovative teaching methods. The model of vocational education and training in many EU countries is similar, namely, covering two years of upper secondary school and 1-2 years of apprenticeship. The concept of «apprenticeship» is understood as a form of education and training that allows a student to acquire the competencies necessary for work in a profession through structured and paid or otherwise financially reimbursable on-the-job training leading to a recognized qualification. It is concluded that in the EU countries, vocational education and training at the high school level is an important component of the educational system, which provides students with not only academic knowledge but also practical skills necessary for employment. The implementation of vocational education and training is based on national peculiarities and has common principles (integration of practical training, close cooperation with employers, and competency-based approach). It is proved that the integration of vocational education and training programs into the EU school system contributes to providing students with relevant skills that meet the needs of the labor market, early professional self-determination of young people, reducing unemployment among young people, creating opportunities for continuous education and career growth.
