Abstract
The article is dedicated to the study of the content of psycho-pedagogical diagnosis and its application in the education system for children with special educational needs (SEN). The purpose of the article is to substantiate the psycho-pedagogical diagnosis as the only objective method for differentiating the development of children with SEN in the context of various forms of education. The theoretical research methods used include analysis, synthesis, comparison, and generalization of theoretical and empirical results of scientific studies on the problem at hand. A critical assessment of the current state of diagnostics for children with SEN in the domestic education system is provided. It demonstrates the unproductiveness of rejecting diagnostic definitions in inclusive education and the inadmissibility of medical diagnostics in selecting special education institutions. The need for psycho-pedagogical diagnosis and its differentiation from medical diagnosis in the education system for children with SEN is substantiated. The diagnostic process is viewed as the identification of hierarchical disruptions in child development and the determination of the primary disorders that define the typological differences in the development of children with SEN, essential for structuring the pedagogical process. The paper emphasizes the need to reintegrate into the education system for children with SEN the domestic principles of psycho-pedagogical diagnosis that have been unjustifiably abandoned. In particular, the diagnosis of intellectual development disorders should be based on the principle of the child's current development level and zone of proximal development.
