Abstract
The main directions of development of school European civic and citizenship education have been identified, in particular: expanding the list of countries in which civic education is introduced as a separate mandatory subject with an increase in the number of hours spent on its study; revising the content of civic education with an emphasis on the common values of democracy and tolerance, pan-European history and culture, various aspects of the functioning of the European Union; strengthening the practical component of civic education through participatory pedagogy; introducing a specialization of teachers in civic education; establishing effective interaction between various subjects of dissemination of civic education.
