Abstract
The article examines the key aspects of adult education in the 21st century in the context of the European strategy. The authors analyze the main challenges facing the adult education system, such as rapid changes in the labor market, technological innovations and demographic changes. Opportunities arising from the integration of new educational technologies and approaches, such as distance learning and flexible educational programs are under special attention. The article emphasizes the importance of continuous learning to increase the competitiveness of adults in the modern world, as well as the role of public and private initiatives in providing access to quality education. Education and training are part of the solution to getting more people into decent work and better responding to the skills the economy needs. In conditions of rapid technological progress and related changes in work requirements, lifelong learning must be based on strong collaboration and synergy between industry, education, training and educational institutions. Education and training systems must also adapt to this reality. In particular, it is no longer enough to provide young people with a fixed set of skills or knowledge; they need to develop a broad set of competencies and the ability to adapt to change. Thus, the need and value of a lifelong learning perspective, where people acquire new and more relevant competencies throughout their lives, is more evident than ever. No graduate of a school, institution of professional (vocational and technical) education, college, institute or university can now afford to stop at the achieved level of knowledge. Only adult education and lifelong education can preserve and improve a person’s professional and social status. The facet that the attitude towards adult education is changing, both among teachers and among the general public, no longer needs evidence. Today, the idea of lifelong incompleteness of education for an adult is announced.
