Abstract
The article examines the influence of religiosity on the hardiness and emotional state of an individual in wartime, the existence of a relationship between them, and the mechanisms that play the greatest role in this regard. The study of this issue is relevant due to the growing number of people facing stressful situations and psycho-emotional stress as a result of military operations. The study used several methods, including surveys, interviews, and statistical data analysis. According to the results, it was found that religiosity is an important internal resource for overcoming stress, manifesting emotional stability and maintaining hardiness. Moreover, people with a high level of religiosity are less prone to anxiety, fear, and hopelessness, and more often experience emotional uplift, hope, and satisfaction from life. It has been determined that religiosity is a certain psychosocial resource that helps a person to cope more effectively with stress and life’s troubles, provides a sense of coherence and meaning, promotes rethinking of negative events, gives strength to overcome trauma, and, in turn, leads to strengthening of hardiness. The results of the statistical analysis confirmed that religiosity is a significant predictor of hardiness. In addition, religiosity may also have an indirect effect on hardiness through other emotional and psychological components, such as “self-confidence,” “willingness to help others,” and “work on oneself.” The mechanisms of interconnection between religiosity and hardiness of a personality are revealed. Namely, the author identifies those resources of a personality that can be conditioned by his/her religiosity and contribute to his high level of hardiness. In particular, these include the individual’s knowledge of the characteristics of their own resources, i.e., awareness of their preferences and individual characteristics, as well as the ability to renew their own resources, which is an important mechanism for reducing mental stress and restoring internal balance. The study also found that personal religiosity influences and determines the level of one of the structural components of hardiness, namely engagement. It contributes to the manifestation of an active life position, which is realized through sociability, the desire to show humanity and benevolence, enables the individual to continue to communicate and be involved in active life, despite a difficult life situation, which is a necessary element in maintaining a favorable level of resilience and manifesting constructive coping strategies. It is worth noting that a similar relationship was found between the indicators of subjective definition of one’s own religiosity and the structural component of hardiness – involvement. That is, religious individuals are more active, motivated and open, they are easy to contact and have a positive perception of the surrounding reality, which helps them overcome difficulties and life’s troubles. The results emphasize the importance of taking into account religiosity in maintaining psychological wellbeing and hardiness of an individual, in particular, in the context of post-conflict, war and other stressful situations. Taking into account the religious aspect can be useful for developing psychological support and intervention strategies aimed at increasing hardiness, as well as for developing social and psychological rehabilitation programs to reduce the negative effects of trauma. Thus, religiosity is an important resource not only for maintaining hardiness, but also for strengthening the overall mental health and emotional well-being of an individual in the face of modern challenges and threats.
