Abstract
The scientific achievements of leading Ukrainian and foreign scholars on environmental education, environmental culture, environmental education and, as a result, environmental awareness are highlighted. Attention is focused on the works in which researchers argue that environmental issues are considered a matter of global concern and require the creation of a personal developmental educational eco-space where people understand that nature is not an object for exploitation, and the existence of all mankind depends on how to treat it. It is emphasised that the educational eco-space is a factor in the formation of an eco-competent personality capable of non-pragmatic interaction with nature, environmentally appropriate behaviour in the environment, and building relationships with the world around us in accordance with the principles of sustainable development of society. The author's opinion on the historical origins of the concept of education for sustainable development is presented. It is noted that such development requires major and radical changes, in particular in human behaviour and habits. It is noted that the international profile of environmental education for sustainable development is formed by such countries as Japan, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, etc. The author considers the works that specify the content and structure of the eco-competence of a science teacher on the basis of sustainable development of society, and substantiates the need to include it in the state standards of higher education, which is already a reality. The author makes a prognostic conclusion that the formation of ecoconsciousness, knowledge and thinking as reflexive prerequisites for environmental rationality, as well as the definition of their features, is an important task facing modern science and should be realised. It is emphasised that the results of research within one field of knowledge become the basis for prompt changes in the eco-models of research in other sciences and vice versa. It is noted that modern environmental education in the world is built around four aspects of learning: to learn to know; to act; to exist; to live together. The author focuses on the aesthetic needs of a person, which are satisfied primarily in the process of perceiving the beauty of nature, comprehending it, and reflecting on eternal themes. At the same time, the aesthetic needs of the individual, the sense of harmony and disharmony are a necessary component of the development of environmental awareness, the environmental culture of the modern person. It is emphasised that human eco-consciousness isthe security of the country, the key to the continued existence of life on the planet. The analytical review was prepared to fulfil the analytical and synthetic stage of the research «Information and Analytical Support for the Digital Transformation of Education and Pedagogy: Domestic and Foreign Experience» (2023-2025).
