Abstract
Social inclusion is an important social phenomenon because it allows the recognition and celebration of diversity, enables the participation of different social groups in public life, and enhances their contribution to societal development. Social inclusion is a prerequisite for the formation of cohesive and resilient societies; therefore, its role will grow during the postwar recovery and the survival of Ukraine’s economy, territories, communities, and families. While Ukraine lacks experience and expertise in developing social inclusion in and via higher education, and considering twenty years of experience in the European Higher Education Area (hereinafter EHEA), this paper aims to explore the social dimension of higher education, draw attention of Ukrainian academia to its significance, and outline the benefits and possibilities of its application in Ukraine’s higher education for enhancing social inclusion in the education sector and society at large. The study allows to interpret the social dimension of EHEA as a strategic and cross-cutting function in university operations, as an algorithm for social inclusion enhancement, implemented with the participation of university administration, staff and students, authorities, business, civil society, and other higher education stakeholders. The social dimension of higher education in the EHEA has been evolving for two decades, transforming from accessibility to proportional representation of societal profile among student population to higher inclusivity of higher education. Currently, “Principles and Guidelines to Strengthen the Social Dimension of Higher Education in EHEA” are setting the strategic agenda, focusing on inclusion, diversity, and equity. Approaches and practices promoted by the above Principles and Guidelines can be applied by a separate Ukrainian HEI or advanced by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science of Ukraine, the National Agency for Quality Assurance, and other external stakeholders.
