Abstract

The article is devoted to the consideration of speech activity as the basis for the formation of junior students’ communicative competence. Based on the analysis of scientific sources, communicative competence is defined as the ability to engage in communication, to be understood, and to communicate freely and effectively. This competence involves the complex use of linguistic and non-linguistic means, the ability to change the topic and circle of communication, as well as the ability to interpret non-verbal manifestations of other people. The role of speech activity in forming junior students’ communicative competence is revealed. Speech activity is characterised as an active, purposeful process of creating and perceiving statements, which is carried out with the help of language means during the interaction of people in various speech situations. The approaches and methods of organising speech activity in the educational environment of the New Ukrainian School are substantiated. Particular attention is paid to the child’s mastery of speech abilities and skills, which are an important component of the system of communicative competence formation. The criteria for the formation of junior students’ communicative competence according to the State Standard of Junior Education are considered. Attention is focused on the need to apply methods, techniques and forms of teaching that form students’ communication skills; the ability to express and interpret concepts, thoughts, feelings, facts and views; the ability to develop their point of view. The knowledge and personal qualities acquired by students in primary grades, related to the formation of communication and speech skills, will become the foundation for further education, upbringing, development of self-expression, will largely determine practical, public, professional activities in the future, because speech development is a necessary condition for life schoolboy.
