Abstract
The article substantiates the relevance of the problem of the development of ecological competence of younger schoolchildren in the context of social and educational challenges in Ukraine and the world, relying on normative documents of the international and domestic levels, summarizing the data of comparative studies. Conceptual approaches to the content of the initial research category "ecological education" in variable views on its components, technological characteristics as a competence result of school ecological education in the activitybased learning dimension are defined; the content and pedagogical essence of the formation of ecological competence of younger schoolchildren in lessons and in extracurricular activities is specified, which consists in the purposeful formation of a system of ecological knowledge about the interrelationships in nature, the influence of human activity on natural processes; education of ecologically appropriate behavioral norms, development of skills of rational nature use; formation of a spiritual and valuable attitude towards nature as a universal, unique value, which has the right to exist regardless of the benefit to a man. A diagnostic program for researching the state of ecological education in elementary grades has been developed based on teachers' requests regarding the effectiveness of changes in content and procedural provision. It has been established that it is in the 1st degree school that the activity-based approach is decisive in ecological education, because through activities the child gets to know the world around him/her and acquires experience in environmental protection behavior. On the basis of the obtained data, the requirements for the effectiveness of ecological education, provided in the National Qualifications Framework of Ukraine, the State Standard of Primary Education, and Typical Curricula by learning cycles, are summarized. The conclusions have been drawn regarding the effectiveness of certain methods of ecological education (doing projects; participation in volunteer activities; acting out situations of moral choice related to safe behavior in nature; observation trips; solving natural problems). To increase the effectiveness of ecological education, it is considered expedient to boost the number of interactive forms of ecological education; to develop the cross-cutting mutually agreed program for the formation of ecological competence at all levels of school education; to create a system of comprehensive assessment of students' ecological competencies.
