Abstract
The article deals with the issue of designing the content of history education in upper secondary education. The authors emphasize the potential of history in shaping the personality of a secondary school graduate. The diverse experience of European countries in designing high school history courses based on concentric and chronologically sequential approaches to its structuring is highlighted. The authors also identifies the problems of forming historical content, including: the principles of content selection in the context of limited time for their study in the basic curriculum, establishing the chronological framework of certain history courses, especially material related to the study of the present, the possibility of developing integrated courses of national and world history, the discrepancy between the requirements of the State Standard of upper secondary education and current approaches to creating an effective model of history education. Studies conducted by researchers at the Institute of Pedagogy of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine have shown that most history teachers consider it optimal to teach history in upper secondary education institutions as two separate subjects: History of Ukraine and World History for three years. The distribution of educational historical material by years of study remains a controversial issue, as well as the concept of presenting modern history, in particular the events of the early twenties of 21st century and Russia's large-scale aggression against Ukraine.
