Abstract
The thesis characterizes the process of recognizing national stereotypes and prejudices as an important stage in the formation of intercultural competence of male and female students of general secondary education institutions. The definition of a stereotype is considered. Using the example of A. Conan Doyle's program work, it is proposed to consider an example of national stereotypes that led the main character to a false hypothesis. It is noted that literature lessons have a large the potential to create learning situations that give opportunity to discuss issues of intercultural communication and problems that arise as a result of being in society.
