Abstract
Social science subjects play the crucial role in national-patriotic upbringing, the teaching of which aims at developing political culture, fostering social optimism, and shaping the worldview positions of students. The article aims to determine the role of school historical education in shaping patriotic values and civic consciousness among education seekers. Patriotic upbringing and civic education are the main components of the modern Ukrainian education system. The formation of patriotism and civic education complement each other, promoting the development of an active, conscious, and responsible civic position of the individual. Special attention should be paid to fostering patriotism among the younger generation during history classes, which contributes to the development of historical memory and the formation of patriotically inclined individuals based on historical examples. The article characterizes patriotism as a complex and rational phenomenon, describing its primary functions. It is worth noting that a person's attachment to their state stems from a love for their homeland, requiring attention to the socio-cultural context of a specific region to foster and develop patriotic feelings and civic consciousness among education seekers. Emphasis is put on the assignment of historical education, such as shaping individuals capable of critically evaluating the past and present, understanding and respecting diverse perspectives, demonstrating readiness for dialogue, and making informed decisions based on solid values. It is indicated that historical education should serve as a means of reconciling different models of historical memory, shaping civic consciousness, dignity, and honor of education seekers in harmony with national and universal values, supporting the ideals of humanism, democracy, goodness, and justice, as well as fostering constructive dialogue on past and present issues of social development.
