Abstract

In the paper the phenomenon of death anxiety is studied. It is pointed out that death anxiety can underlie our everyday worries, fears and be at the root of different psychological disorders. Various psychological defense mechanisms, which mitigate the impact of death anxiety, are analyzed. Psychological defense mechanisms, which are specific for overcoming death anxiety, are also investigated, namely: the faith in one’s own uniqueness and the faith in the final saviour. Attention is drawn to empiric investigations of various manifestations of these psychological defense mechanisms. The psychological proximity of such phenomena as faith in one’s own uniqueness and optimism is hypothesized. It is pointed out that involvement in extreme kinds of sports can help a person reconsider the meaning of anxiety and fear, find their positive side and integrate them into his/her life activity as factors which contribute to the achievement of one’s own goals. Considering the faith in the final saviour, which can be manifested in religious faith, it should be noted that it is desirable to steer religiousness of patients into a constructive direction, keeping in mind its usefulness for psychological health of patients. An issue of the help in the situation of excessive death anxiety, when everyday psychological defense mechanisms fail, is raised. Some modern and ancient psychological methods for reducing death anxiety are considered. Certain philosophical ideas, which are theoretically able to reduce death anxiety, are analyzed. It is pointed out that establishment and development of relations with other people can be beneficial for the reduction of death anxiety level. But it should be taken into account that the intention to establish relations with other people in order to overcome death anxiety can be transformed into a certain form of faith in the final saviour, which can be disadaptive for a person. It is underlined that the issue of death anxiety needs further theoretical and empirical studies.
