Abstract

It is stated that the EU positions equitable education systems of its Member States as a tool for building a fair and inclusive European community. It is revealed that the concept of equity is integrated into official documents that form the benchmarks for national policies of the EU Member States. The article describes the formats of ensuring equity in general secondary education in the EU countries, which include minimising the gaps in performance between students with high and low levels of achievement (the dimension of inclusion), as well as eliminating the impact of socio-economic background on student performance (the dimension of equality). It is concluded that the concept of equitable general secondary education in the EU is an important benchmark for Ukraine. Ukraine’s obtaining the status of an EU candidate in 2022 intensifies the European integration of its national science and education. This includes harmonisation with Strategic priority 1: “Improving quality, equity, inclusion and success for all in education and training” of the current Strategic Framework for European Cooperation in Education and Training towards the European Education Area and beyond (2021-2030).
