Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of the problem of the essence, ways and means of organizing formative assessment in teaching mathematics. The article provides some historical data on the formation of a scientific understanding of the essence of formative assessment, its place and role in the modern educational process, its basic stages and the relevant tools. Based on the results of the research, it was concluded that formative assessment is internal in nature and can be carried out exclusively by the student. The role of the teacher becomes significantly different compared to traditional types of assessment. In the course of the study, it was found that a specific toolkit is needed to provide the five basic stages of formative assessment. The author's examples of such tools for the mathematics course of the 6th grade of NUS are given.
