Abstract
The full-scale invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine aims to destroy an independent country by force, to destroy the existence of the Ukrainian nation itself. In such realities, one of the leading tasks of the humanitarian sciences is the activation of the accumulation of knowledge about the formation of the Ukrainian nation, the understanding of its ethno-national progress. Cultivation of one's own intellectual elite, particularly in the field of education, is an indispensable component of the realization of the Ukrainian state idea. Taking into account the critical political situation, a kind of "revision" of the cohort of personalities that at one time joined the creation of Ukrainian national education as an important aspect of the state-building process becomes especially relevant. After all, a significant part of the actors in this area remains underestimated or even forgotten. The purpose of the article is a renewed appreciation of S. Vasylchenko's contribution to the formation and development of the national Ukrainian school in order to update his personality in the collective portrait of educational figures of Ukraine. It was concluded that the literary heritage of S. Vasylchenko was quite actively researched both in the Soviet period and in independent Ukraine. However, his activities in the field of education remain underestimated. At the same time, the actor's autobiographical works ("Typical biography", "My path (Autobiographical notes)") are a valuable source of information about the state of education for the common people in the Russian Empire, and pedagogical journalism published on the pages of the first Ukrainian magazines "New Community", "Rada", "Svitlo" ("National school and native language in Ukraine: Notes of a national teacher", "Living speech" in the Ukrainian school", "On the Kyiv teachers' courses", etc.), reflects the struggle of the Ukrainian intelligentsia on the border of the 19th and 20th centuries with by the assimilative policy of the tsarist government, in particular for the right to the existence of native-language educational institutions. The relevance of the issue of the harmful influence of the tsar's ban on the functioning of Ukrainian educational institutions became the reason for the publication of a separate pamphlet by S. Vasylchenko "In a Modern School", which was published in 1914 and 1917.
