Abstract

The article proves that the study of the modern professional and social status of teachers in Ukrainian society will provide an opportunity to obtain scientifically based data on the status characteristics of this professional group and formulate appropriate conclusions, the consideration of which will help to optimize the search for ways to elevate the prestige of the teaching profession and the formation of public opinion about it. It is substantiated that the socio-professional status of a teacher is an appropriate level achieved in society, the basis of which is a set of rights and obligations; it is determined by the attitude of society based on professional ethics, professionalism, culture, competence, and can be improved both at the personal and social levels. The author emphasizes that the teaching profession in Ukraine currently ranks low on the scale of measuring the prestige of professions and is one of the most unpopular among students. It is advisable to profoundly change the remuneration system for educators to create conditions for the formation of teachers apos; interest in the results of their professional activities and the desire to improve their level of professional competence. However, mechanical increases in salaries cannot solve numerous problems related to the status and efficiency of teaching staff. It is necessary to develop an effective system of incentives for teaching. The professional and personal development of an adult, including a teacher, is directly related to the transformation of their motivational and emotional-volitional spheres, changes in attitudes, professional needs and goals, and the internalization of new experience. At the same time, there are structural changes in the personality aimed at expanding the range of their interests, changing the system of needs; actualization of the motives for achieving them; and growth of the need for self-realization and self-development. The objective and subjective conditionality of a teacher's attitude to personal and professional development is the basis for creating a set of measures aimed at forming their educational needs. This system of measures should be based on the analysis of the relationship between education and the most important aspects of society, as well as on the peculiarities of the status and position of an adult, their attitude to the world, education, and themselves.
