Abstract

The article summarizes the results of a roundtable discussion to find answers to current issues in general secondary and extracurricular education, developing an action plan and recommendations for overcoming contemporary challenges. It provides brief information about the event and an extended presentation of participants' ideas on the raised topics. The author formulates suggestions in the following directions: problems, threats, and challenges in Ukrainian general secondary and extracurricular education; strategies for modernizing Ukrainian general secondary and extracurricular education on the path to decolonization and Eurointegration; meeting the needs of gifted students in legislative, theoretical, and practical aspects of general school and extracurricular education, the role of scientific education. Based on the reports and discussions on relevant issues, the participants highlighted the following problems and challenges: the consequences of the Russo-Ukrainian war; the effects of administrative reform, which involves increasing the number of districts and, consequently, reducing the budget; the development of artificial intelligence that can change the education system; the existing rigid and undifferentiated system of teacher remuneration; shortcomings in the extracurricular education system; deficiencies at the legislative and methodological levels in the gifted education; heavy workload of teachers due to reporting, and more. The proposals for overcoming decolonization in education included neutralizing the imposed inferiority complex among Ukrainians, integrating educational process participants into the Ukrainian cultural space, producing their own quality content, and achieving international success. The path to Eurointegration requires the formation of a national identity and preserving uniqueness, enhancing the country's reputation, and maintaining communication with citizens temporarily residing abroad. To meet the needs of gifted students, recommendations were developed regarding their recognition as learners with special educational needs at the legislative level, ensuring their right to personalized education, increasing the number of motivational measures at the state and local levels, making changes to the procedure for registering children and intensification coordinating educational and migration services, creating a database of gifted children and their teachers from occupied territories, and ensuring the restoration of gifted students' health.
