Abstract
The theses present the main conclusions of the scientific study of the essence and didactic conditions of the formation of metalinguistic competence of students. The concept of metalinguistic competence has been clarified, which means the student's ability to perform abstract-logical operations with several language systems on the basis of cross-linguistic transfer in order to perform a mediating role in oral and written communication, providing and exchanging information, taking into account the peculiarities of different linguistic and cultural systems. It was concluded that learning a new language is influenced by the transfer of the student's existing knowledge and skills from other languages, universal features of language acquisition in general. The main skills that determine metalinguistic competence include the skills: it is communicatively appropriate to switch from one language to another in the process of communication; to correct, analyze and explain errors in written and oral speech; play a mediating role in groups with different levels of communicative competence in different languages in order to achieve a communicative goal or accomplish a common task; concisely or close to the text to convey its content in another language (translation, abstract, abstract, theses); oral or written translation (accurate, with the aim of conveying the main content, literary); to process the text, creating a secondary text in another language on its basis. It was determined that the exercises that contribute to the development of metalinguistic skills are exercises on cross-language comparison and analysis at different language levels, their identification and differentiation; exercises to find and correct errors; exercises and tasks that actualize the mediating role of students based on communicative situations in a bilingual or multilingual environment; exercises and tasks for the development of translation skills; creation of retellings, secondary texts, etc.
