The focus is on the main characteristics of elective courses and their target direction. The typology of elective courses (pre-profile and profile elective courses) from the point of view of different scientific approaches is singled out and characterized. The types of elective courses are distinguished, among which there are pre-profile and profile EC. The selection of pre-profile and profile elective courses consisted of: general-orientation EC, subject-orientation and interdisciplinary elective courses). Among the profile elective courses there are such as: interdisciplinary EC, elective courses in subjects that are not included in the basic curriculum. Examples of elective courses («Problems of ecology», «Effective behavior in conflict», «Conditions for successful communication», «Geography of human perspectives», etc.) are given and their semantic characteristics are revealed.
