Abstract

Within weeks, millions of people - more than a quarter of the population - left their homes to seek refuge abroad or in other parts of Ukraine, further away from the violence. This mass displacement due to the war and the previous eight years of conflict in the eastern region of the country has put some 7.5 million children at extreme risk to their mental and physical health, as many of their basic needs remain unmet, including physical security, shelter, food, education and social support. The ongoing war in Ukraine is expected to have a negative impact on the mental health of the entire population of the country, and this makes children particularly vulnerable to mental health problems during forced displacement and after the war. The purpose of this study is to give a preliminary assessment of the degree of change in the mental health problems of Ukrainian children after the Russian invasion in February 2022.
