Abstract

The main aspects of the influence of social values and value orientations of citizens on socio-political processes in Ukraine are revealed. It is proved that one of the most important principles and, at the same time, instruments of social reforms is a consolidating value paradigm acceptable to the vast majority of citizens. Conversely, value imbalance destabilises the system, generates uncertainty, cataclysms, fear, upheaval, and ultimately destroys it. In countries that have just embarked on the path of democratic transformation, trends of value splits often emerge, and often intensify and deepen. It is shown that social development is accompanied by the emergence and development of a relatively independent, stable system of values. In this sense, social values, on the one hand, determine and influence the content of norms, and on the other hand, form a kind of motivational and semantic system of coordinates for the individual, regulate his or her activities, and offer socially acceptable forms of behaviour. It is substantiated that from a methodological point of view, it is erroneous to interpret values and the formation of a value system as a process of exclusively rational choice, since the combination and interpenetration of the rational and irrational, sometimes the dominance of the latter, forms a coherent system of values and orientations towards them.
