Abstract
The article examines the content formation issues of general physics course in the national high school from its inception to the implementation of a unified system of higher education in the 1930s. It reflects the peculiarities of its implementation in educational programs and textbooks for Ukrainian universities. On the basis of historical and methodical analysis of the physical education content, the social and cultural conditioning of the following process and its compliance with the directions of the development of European science and education are proved. The main stages of the general physics course formation are characterized from its gradual setting as a separate subject to the formation of basic university courses, the content of which was based on the principles of scientificity and systematicity, strong historical and didactical foundations were laid in order to build the modern physical educational system in higher professional school. The tendencies of development of general physics course at different stages of higher education development are determined: separation of physics courses content within the structure of natural philosophy courses on the basis of modern European physical science achievements and formation of self-discipline; systematization of the content elements according to classical physical theories; standardization and systematization, strengthening the scientific character of the content; creation of the first national textbooks for higher education; polytechnization of the general physics course content, enhancing its technical and industrial focus; implementation of common curricula and fixed textbooks for general physics course and its unification.
