Abstract
The report reveals the essence of the concept of "national and civic identification" from the point of view of pedagogy and psychology, and substantiates the importance of its formation among young people. The important role and significant potential of historical and civic education in the formation of the national identity of male and female students of secondary education institutions is determined. The realization of this potential requires changes in the content of school historical and civic education, in particular, the removal from programs and textbooks of narratives containing Russian manipulation of the history of Ukraine, strengthening the role of the national victorious myth, emphasizing the facts regarding the European integration of Ukraine and the importance of these processes. The methodology of teaching history and civic education, which contributes to the formation of Ukrainian national identity, should be based on active learning. Conscious national identity is formed if historical knowledge is the result of students' independent work with sources in the process of research, for example, local or oral history or project work. Such activity on the relevant historical or civics content enables an individual to make his own choice regarding belonging to a social group. Relevant instructions and recommendations for teachers should include both history textbooks and teaching and methodical guides for different classes.
