Abstract
The manual presents the results of scientific research by employees of the foreign language teaching department of the Institute of Pedagogy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The conceptual foundations of the methodology of competence-oriented teaching of foreign languages for students of grades 5–6 were considered, the principles of selection and use of types of educational activities for the purpose of forming key and subject competencies were determined and substantiated. The peculiarities of the formation of intercultural foreign language communicative competence in speaking (monologue, dialogue), listening, reading, writing are revealed; the levels of its formation and evaluation criteria are defined. The didactic essence of the situational approach as a means of competence-oriented learning of foreign language communication is outlined and a system of educational actions contributing to its implementation is proposed. Samples of typical speech situations as means of competence-oriented teaching of English, German, and Spanish for students of 5th and 6th grades of gymnasiums are presented within the framework of the program. The methodical guide is recommended to teachers of foreign languages, methodologists, university teachers and everyone who is interested in improving the relevant educational field.
